学了这么多年英语，查字典看到supper 和dinner的意思都是晚饭的意思，到底有什么区别呢？还是有区别的。

Dinner 这个词本意是正餐，比较主要的，比较丰盛的一餐。这个词本身不包含时间的概念， “丰盛” 是关键。所以，你可以中午吃这个dinner，你也可以晚上吃这个dinner。而在 dinner 这个词最开始使用的时候，在实际的生活中外国人也是这么用的。特别是在18，19世纪国外的农村，经常在中午吃 dinner，因为吃饱了饭下午好继续干活。原则上讲，你要是想在早上吃 dinner 也没有人拦着你，只是要注意减肥。

The word dinner does not necessarily imply the time of day. Depending on where you are, it may mean the midday meal or the evening meal, but it always refers to the main meal of the day.

相比之下，supper 这个词，是真正的“晚”餐的意思。这个 supper 是专门指晚上或者晚上睡觉前吃的比较量少的一餐。这是真资格的晚餐。注意 “晚上” 和 “量少” 是关键。

但是，这个真资格的晚餐 supper 在语言的发展中败给了 dinner。原因之一是人们在农村从事重体力劳动的需要越来越少了，dinner 因量足是为了吃饱饭干活的意义越来越淡化了，而dinner丰盛的意义越来越突出，全家人晚上相聚的需求越来越多，对晚餐的要求越来越高。说白了，是 “量少” 败给了 “丰盛”，凭什么晚上那顿就要少吃呢？全家人在一起还不大吃大喝一顿？虽然从医学上讲，晚上少吃点有助身体健康。但是，大家要是都听了医生的话，这生活还有什么乐趣？

Google(谷歌)对这几个词的使用频率做了调查，

从上图你可以看出 dinner （最高那根线）的使用频率越来越高，而 supper （最低那根线）的使用频率自1900年以来越来越低。现在在美国，我很少听到有人把晚饭叫做 supper，基本都用 dinner 代替了。

我们发现对于Dinner的定义主要是：

1. The main meal of the day, taken either around midday or in the evening.

2. A formal evening meal, typically one in honour of a person or event.

也就是说，Dinner主要有两个意思：

1、正餐（可以是中餐，也可以是晚餐）

2、晚宴（主要是宴请某人或举办活动）

而词源词典（www.etymonline.com）对于Dinner一词的演化是这样解释的：

Always used in English for the main meal of the day, but the time of that has gradually shifted later.

In medieval and modern Europe the common practice, down to the middle of the eighteenth century, was to take this meal about midday, or in more primitive times even as early as 9 or 10 A.M. In France, under the old régime, the dinner-hour was at 2 or 3 in the afternoon; but when the Constituent Assembly moved to Paris, since it sat until 4 or 5 o'clock, the hour for dining was postponed. The custom of dining at 6 o'clock or later has since become common, except in the country, where early dinner is still the general practice. [Century Dictionary, 1897]

也就是说，从十八世纪一开始，Dinner主要是指午餐，其用餐时间可早至上午九点或十点。在法国，Dinner的时间从下午两三点慢慢推迟到六点或更晚。

所以，当你中午在某地吃着丰盛的午餐的时候，其实你是在吃Dinner。

二、Supper

接下来我们来看看柯林斯和牛津英语词典对Supper的定义：

牛津英语词典：An evening meal, typically a light or informal one.

柯林斯英语词典：Some people refer to the main meal eaten in the early part of the evening as supper.

由此可以看出，Supper才是“晚饭”的正解。

需要注意的是，柯林斯英语词典对Supper还给出了这样的解释：

Supper is a simple meal eaten just before you go to bed at night.

这就相当于我们睡觉前吃的“夜宵”，睡前小食。

然而，Dinner与Supper的区别不仅仅是在其所食不同，它们也存在地域使用差异。比如，在美国，更为常用的是Dinner，而在加拿大，更为常用的却是Supper。

Feast 宴会，大餐

Picnic 野餐

Refreshment 饮料，茶点

Meal 一餐，一顿饭

Snack （在两顿饭之间的）加餐，小量的食品，零食
